What Is A Health Insurance Gap?
When we refer to a health insurance gap, we are typically talking about the things that are not covered under a typical health insurance plan. For some people, the health insurance gap is a very real concern. They have health insurance, but they also have some needs that are not covered. This creates a situation where individuals have to get health insurance gap coverage in the form of supplemental insurance. The gap can be frustrating, since you are paying for health coverage, but you are unable to take full advantage of it in many instance.
What does a health insurance gap leave individuals without?
One of the most common things that a health insurance “gap” would fail to cover has to do with outpatient surgery and different outpatient needs. For the most part, an insurance policy will cover the big things that require a hospital stay. If you actually break something or need to have a big procedure, it will cover most of that. But what happens when you need something on an outpatient basis? The health insurance gap has to do with not being able to cover the costs of things like x-rays, since these are quite common and they are often unprotected under a standard insurance policy.
The health insurance gap that doesn’t go far enough
When some people talk about their gap, they mean that their current health insurance just doesn’t provide enough coverage. That might mean that they are in need of some big surgery or a massive hospital stay, but their insurance policy has a cap on what it will pay. Some of the biggest needs – like a transplant – will often require more medical coverage than the average policy is equipped to take on. They will cover these things up to a point, but the rest will fall on the policy holder. For that reason, gap insurance is taken out to cover the supplemental costs.
