How Does Health Insurance Affect the Middle Class?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

In the United States, the middle class is the biggest group, but they are often the most forgotten group when it comes to political speech. One of the hottest topics today is health insurance, and many people are finally asking the hard questions. What impact does health insurance have on the middle class? How does health insurance affect the middle class and do the majority of these people have it? The truth is that it’s a huge cost for many in the middle class, and they can be broken down into two groups.

Small business owners and health insurance

For some small business owners that fall into the middle class category, health insurance is something that they have toyed with. For these people, there is no employee benefits package. They run their own business, so they don’t have an employer to provide them with a host of nice health care benefits. What this means is that if they want to purchase health insurance, they have to do so directly. They have to take the tests and fork out the thousands of dollars to insure themselves and their families. For many, this is a cost that’s being cut out, and it’s a dangerous trend in today’s world with all of the dangers out there.

Middle class family men who “work for the man”

For the people who are employed by a company, most will have a health insurance plan that is provided by their employer. This is a great cost cutting thing, because these folks can have their entire family protected under this plan. Even when their kids go off to college, their employer health insurance plan covers the kids, so it is not a worry. For these folks, health care is something that is affordable, and they don’t have the worries that small business owners do. These people aren’t left out on their own, and they most certainly benefit from their roles with various companies.
