How To Buy Group Health Insurance?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Have you been searching for health insurance coverage for you and your spouse or children? If so, you are likely aware that group health rates are significantly lower than individual insurance rates. How do you buy group health insurance, so you can get the coverage you need without paying a small fortune in premiums every month?

Group Health Insurance through an Employer

The most cost effective way to get group coverage is by enrolling in an employer’s group health insurance plan. Many employers offer their employees the option to obtain coverage at discounted rates. Since the insurance company’s risk is spread among all employees enrolled in the plan, it can offer lower rates than would be available through an individual policy. Some employers even subsidize part of the premiums, so you can save even more money with this strategy.

Joining a Guild or Professional Association

If getting group coverage through an employer is not an option, you may be able to obtain group health insurance through a trade guild or professional association. These entities serve professionals in a variety of niches – you can find guilds that cater to visual artists, authors, skilled tradesmen, and other business owners. The rates will not likely be as low as through an employer, and you may receive less coverage for your money, but this can still be a good way to find adequate group health coverage to meet your needs.

Buying Group Health Insurance for Your Business

Another method of buying group health insurance coverage is getting a policy for your own business. In some states, sole proprietorship and partnerships can qualify for group plans; in others, you might need to register your business as a limited liability company or a corporation. Rates can still be high, but they are typically still lower than rates charged for individual health insurance.

How To Get Group Health Insurance?

If you have been looking for health insurance coverage, then you may know that group coverage is typically more comprehensive and less expensive than individual health insurance. How do you get group health insurance coverage?

Group Health Insurance Through Your Employer

The easiest and least expensive way to obtain group health insurance coverage is by subscribing to your employer’s policy. Large employers can negotiate better raters for their employees. Also, many employers will pay part of your insurance costs. You will have the option of subscribing when you accept employment with a participating company, or during the company’s annual enrollment period.

Obtaining Group Coverage Through a Trade Organization

If you are self employed, or if health insurance is not available through your employer, another option is getting group coverage through a trade organization or guild. There are guilds available for nearly any type of self employed worker, including actors, freelance writers, contractors, and retail store owners. Because these organizations are often quite large, they have the power to negotiate with insurance companies to obtain attractive group coverage policies for their members. Keep in mind that these organizations may not offer group coverage in all states.

Becoming a “Group of One”

In some states, you can obtain group coverage by registering your business, and by listing yourself on your health insurance application as a “group of one.” If this is not possible, and you and your spouse own a business, you may choose to register the business as a limited liability company. This will allow you to obtain a group policy, listing yourself and your spouse as employees of the business. This is typically the least cost effective option, because the loss experience of the group is limited to the health history of you and your spouse – if either of you have had past illnesses, the premiums can be nearly as high as for individual coverage.
