How Does The Federal Government Help People Afford Health Insurance?
There are a number of ways that the federal government helps people afford health insurance in the United States. Believe it or not, there are existing measures in place to help make sure that people are getting the health care that they need. While the health care debate continues to occur and the future of health insurance isn’t quite set in stone, there are other
The State of Health Insurance
Currently, employers are not mandated by the federal government to provide health insurance for employees, but it is highly encouraged and standard practice among most benefits packages that employers offer. The federal government does, however, expect that employers offer something called the COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) for employees who have been terminated and need health insurance in the interim between jobs. While this isn’t as good as having subsidized insurance by the employer, it’s certainly better than having nothing. In addition, unemployment insurance benefits can also help.
Federal Government Programs to Help People Afford Health Insurance
There massive federal programs in place that help Americans cover their health care: Medicaid, Medicare, and TRICARE. These provides health insurance for the sick and disabled, the elderly, and military dependents, respectively. Generally, health insurance is provided for people who work for an employer full-time, but those who are unable to work because of age can get either full or supplemental health insurance through Medicare, and those who are unable to work for other reasons can usually get help through Social Security or Medicaid.
How to Help People Afford Health Insurance in the Future
The federal government can help people afford health insurance in the future by passing a new health reform bill. Its aim is to extend coverage of health insurance to as many of the remaining uninsured Americans as possible. Currently, it will do this through the extension of a public option, which people may opt to buy into if they can’t afford health insurance by other means. The status of the health care system is undergoing a great deal of change, but hopefully America and its citizens will come out healthier than before.
