How Does Health Insurance Work?
Health insurance is a specialized type of insurance that relates to the health of a person. Your health is priceless. When you fall ill, immediate medical attention is usually required. Medical care and attention is not always cheap. In fact, medical care can be very expensive, especially in the case of an emergency such as a car accident or a sudden illness. By buying health insurance, you are ‘insured’ against many of medical costs you may incur if you fall ill or become injured and need medical attention.
How Health Insurance Works
There are a few major health insurance providers such as Aetna, United Health, and Well Point. A customer agrees with them on a set price that he or she will pay each month to the health insurance provider for health insurance coverage. The larger the size of the monthly payment, the larger the coverage will be. The customer agrees to pay the provider a certain amount of money each month in exchange for a certain amount of coverage. As long as the customer pays his monthly payments on time to the provider, the provider will cover the costs of any medical care required by the customer, up to a certain amount of money. The amount of coverage is agreed upon at the beginning of the contract, and it is usually well into the $1,000,000 range. There will usually be a deductible payment required by the customer, such as $300 or $500 to initiate the coverage. The health insurance provider agrees to pay all medical bills incurred by the customer after the deductible payment has been met. This means that if a person with health insurance incurs $500,000 in bills, as long as they pay the first $500, the health insurance provider will cover the rest of the bills.
By paying a health insurance provider a small monthly payment, the customer is insuring that they will not be burdened with unreasonable medical bills in the case of an emergency.
